Amrit’s DIY three-mask quartet replenishes the skin to a healthy, smooth-like-butter condition. But, her best treatment yet is one that goes beyond pores. The recently signed model has long battled with cystic acne and the looming depression it creates. Finding the courage to embrace herself beyond the kenspeckle of boxcar scars has opened up life’s runway of opportunities. In her Vanity Secrets pre-runwway routine, each homemade recipe has a sentimental story of self-love discovery and triumph.

“After I gave myself the gift of showing up authentically and no longer hiding behind acne, I felt perplexed. I realized that I enclosed myself in a cage due to the social construct of perfection,” says Amrit. “[but there’s] freedom since you choose yourself, which is an act of self-acceptance. It inevitably leads to self-love.”

And her journey began with a banana. While rubbing the inner peel of the spotted ripe fruit in circular motions across her face, Amrit admits the fruit facial regimen was happenstance. “It was essentially an intrusive thought […]I didn’t want to embarrass myself in public, so I took a shower,” she says, explaining the moment the banana got her out of a two-day slump where she was affixed to the couch in sadness. After making it a tool of forceful motivation, its natural exfoliating properties worked better than her store purchases. The banana eased her congested pores from the irritants of dead skin cells, and she hasn’t looked back since. Spewing knowledge of the fruit’s attributes through her facial routine, she shows her dedication to remaining informed about skin care.

The second mask has base ingredients rooted in her South Asian heritage: mustard oil, turmeric (haldi) and besan—a gram flour made from chickpea. Besan’s versatility makes it a top skin care hack offering exfoliating properties, and turmeric (which she includes in a daily morning ginger beverage) brightens and challenges uneven skin tones—acting as a natural spot corrector. When her mother gave her the recipe in 2018, she felt her skin rejuvenate and recover from inflammation; its relief brought her to tears, “I felt like I finally did something productive for the health of my skin.”

Antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory have become critical in her DIY trifecta. Her final honey-yogurt blend consists of hydration, anti-oxidants, probiotics, and combating Propionibacterium (P acne). Coating every crevice of her face, she burst into gratitude recounting her recent career highlights: working as the casting director and model lead for Mr. Haque’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection, getting signed to her first agency, Chantale Nadeau and showing up as her authentic self. The latter is a message she’s dedicated to sharing with others. “Having acne in high school felt isolating because I did not have a community of individuals who struggled with their skin the way I did. My younger self would have benefited from hearing my story. As a [teenager], I longed to find a South Asian woman who chose not to hide behind their acne.”

At the Fashion Art Toronto(FAT) fall 2023 show, it was clear she was ready to declare herself as a maverick of the industry. Slow, sultry and effortless, she was free of inhibitions and no longer in hiding. “I am the most confident when I show up authentically, so I’m not afraid to take up space on the runway!”

Try Amrit’s DIY masks and skincare treatment as part of your routine.

The Banana Facial

High in potassium and rich in vitamins A and C, bananas reduce wrinkles and puffiness on the skin, prolonging its vibrancy. To treat your skin, wash your face thoroughly with a cleanser, peel a ripe banana and massage the inner part of the fruit in a circular motion for 5-10 mins. Rinse your face, and prepare for Haldi mask.

The Haldi Mask

The mixture of mustard oil, besan and turmeric powder is a DIY that provides instant radiant results. The mustard oil is a natural humectant, turmeric offers skin-correcting properties, and the gram flour subtly exfoliates dead skin cells. To create the recipe, mix one teaspoon of besan, a pinch of turmeric and one teaspoon of mustard oil to make a paste and slather it onto your face and neck. Leave to rest for 10-15 minutes before washing off with lukewarm water, followed by the honey yogurt mask.

Honey Yogurt Delight

Sweet and powerful, honey remains a household name amongst nutritionists, dieticians, and beauty experts. To complete Amrit’s hydrating mask, mix one tablespoon of plain yogurt and a teaspoon of raw honey into a paste. Slather onto your face evenly and leave for 10-15 minutes before washing with cool water, followed by a gentle water-based toner and moisturizer.
