Jazzy, glittery and 70s quiet storm radio describes the presence of Toronto’s queer Congolese singer, Desiire, who keeps the R&B soulful culture of leaning on album covers alive. With over 80 thousand monthly streams worldwide, the Music Canada gold-certified singer’s Instagram is a visual diary of funky, colourful outfits — accented with jewelled lapel blazers, bedazzled cowboy hats and 4-inch platforms that beautifully demystify gender norms like icons Prince, Grace Jones, David Bowie and RuPaul.
With the current musical climate resurging dance, disco, and electronic sounds, there’s a special place for Desiire’s soultronic ambiance. His recent EP, Starlight (2021) is a melodic body of work reminiscent of 90s R&B with touches of electronic, synth-pop, and groovy vocal inflections. At the top of the year, Desiire released the song, Euphoria with an Afrofuturistic cover art dripped in a red overlay and his face card orbited with intergalactic jewellery accents. Through the red silhouette-like image, he glistens; telling Vainqueur that tending to his skin will always be essential to his self-care regimen as an artist.
The sun shimmers on Desiire’s dewy skin for his Vanity Secret debut against a white wall and chiffon curtain background. “It doesn’t matter how much vitamin c you put on, how much expensive lotion you put on, or how much product you use on your skin; you gotta be able to love yourself,” he says, confessing his open secret. “That’s where it starts.”
Desiire takes his time caring for parts of the face often overlooked, “I mean, there’s no way we will do all this and walk out with dry lips,” he says, wrapping up the thorough skin-to-neck budget-friendly technique. His dewy process starts with his newfound appreciation for toning that he uncovered in the thick of the pandemic. Using Thayer’s Witch Hazel toner with aloe vera and rose petal, he prepares his face for a vitamin c and rosehip blend treatment by 310CA. Rubbing in from the eyebrows to his collarbone, he remarks on being stumped after learning from an L’Oréal article that many people forget to include their necks in skin maintenance. However, he uses Necessaire’s Neck Care Serum which contains ingredients such as rosewater and niacinamide. With his eventful summers, including Toronto Pride week performances, he faces sculpts with his favourite jade roller and Garnier Facial mist. When the face pampering is complete, he coats with an oil-free moisturizer, plumps the lip with an aloe vera-based Vaseline and massages down his luscious beard using damp hands and Jamaican castor oil. Finalizing with an eye serum and massage, he’s ready to hit the streets and show up authentically as himself — colourful, vibrant and joyous.
Listen to his gold-selling single— an ArtistsCAN collective performance of American singer and songwriter Bill Withers’ ‘Lean on Me.’ Desiire’s recent single, Euphoria is available on Apple Music and Spotify, and he is currently working on a new album for Summer 2023.
